POONCH town in Jammu and Kashmir wore a deserted look on Thursday after residents, fearful of heavy Pakistani shelling that killed 14 people and injured over 50 the day before, shifted to safer locations.
The border district remains tense. Most institutions and business establishments remained closed. As a precautionary measure, educational institutions in the Poonch, Rajouri, Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts of the Jammu region are closed until Friday. Authorities have also set up operational control rooms in all districts.
On Wednesday, the town witnessed one of the heaviest Pakistani artillery shelling since the 1971 war. Houses, infrastructure, government buildings, places of worship, petrol pumps and several other premises were hit.
