IN many households in Gadag, traditional North Karnataka breakfast items like jowar roti and palya, mandakki susla, girmit, avalakki (poha), rotti mutagi, huruli sangati, uppittu, shavige uppittu, and sajjige have nearly disappeared. Instead idlis and dosas have become the daily breakfast staple.
A significant change has been observed, particularly among schoolchildren. Teachers noted that about 70% of tiffin boxes now contain these South Indian dishes. Earlier, idlis and dosas were reserved for Sundays, but now they are on the daily morning menu.
