50% crash in prices of chilli crop worry farmers

Poor quality, no cold storage, supply from AP hit farmers hard

FARMERS in Gadag's Ron taluk grew large quantities of chillies this year as the crop had fetched them a good income last year. However, the growers are now worried as the prices are going south. The reasons for the price crash is increased chilli crop supply and its quality being affected due to disease. Last year, during January, Guntur, Byadgi, Endofy, Syngenta, Super Ten and others were sold in the range of Rs 62,000 to Rs 75,000 per quintal, but this year, the market price is between Rs 28,000 and Rs 35,000.
