January retail inflation eases to five-month low of 4.31%

SUPPORTED by softening food prices, retail inflation eased to 4.31% in January 2025, down from 5.22% in December 2024, as per data released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation on Wednesday.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell 91 basis points compared to December 2024, which represents the lowest YoY inflation since August 2024. Food inflation dropped to 6.02% in January, its lowest level since August 2024. In December, food inflation stood at 8.39%.
Headline and food inflation in the rural sector fell to 4.64% (provisional) in January 2025, as against 5.76% in December 2024. Urban inflation saw a sharp fall from 4.58% in December to 3.87% (provisional) in January.
