Zomato offers retirement benefits to gig workers

INDIA'S gig economy is witnessing a critical shift as platform companies begin to formally address the long-ignored need for social security among their vast workforce.
In one such development, food delivery platform Zomato has collaborated with HDFC Pension to introduce the NPS Platform Workers Model-a major step toward securing the retirement of its delivery partners.
Unveiled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on NPS Diwas on Wednesday, the initiative directly tackles the financial precarity faced by independent platform workers. Despite NITI Aayog estimating the platform workforce will balloon to 23.5 million by FY30, this segment has historically lacked access to formal retirement benefits, resulting in negligible retirement savings.
