With rupee on a free fall, experts feel MPC may prioritise currency stability over growth

- BENN KOCHUVEEDAN @ Mumbai

THE Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy announcement on Friday is shaping up to be the toughest test yet for Governor Sanjay Malhotra in his first year at the helm. The MPC under him is navigating a rare trilemma: robust economic growth, a sharply weakening rupee, and inflation at multi-decade lows — conditions that ordinarily would have pointed to further monetary easing.

Complicating the policy calculus further is the unusually wide gap between the overnight repo rate and benchmark 10-year bond yields — now at 100-110 basis points, the highest ever — signalling tight liquidity conditions.
