FOLLOWING the pattern in Maharashtra, where some "outsiders" faced hostility during the recent Maha Marathi row, a similar sentiment appears to be emerging in Punjab. The death of a five-year-old boy on September 9 in Hoshiarpur, reportedly involving a migrant labourer, has led to anger, with several panchayats passing resolutions asking migrants without valid documents to leave.
Around 27 panchayats in Hoshiarpur district, including Bajwara, Chak Sadhu, Nandan, Singhpur, Bassi Bahian, Dada, Kila Baroon, Allahabad, Bilaspur, and Anandgarh, have decided not to issue residence verification to migrants lacking Punjab identity papers.
