Nadda: Nehru 'neglected' Vande Mataram

STRIKING a combative tone towards the Congress in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Union Health Minister JP Nadda accused first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru of showing "indifference and neglect" towards Vande Mataram in the Constituent Assembly.
Speaking during a special discussion on 150 years of Vande Mataram, the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha said it was Nehru's prime responsibility to ensure respect for the song but he failed. Referring to historical accounts, Nadda alleged that Nehru did not oppose the 'fatwa' issued by Mohammad Ali Jinnah against Vande Mataram at the Lucknow session of the Congress on October 15, 1937. "Instead of opposing it, Nehru began an inquiry into Vande Matram," Nadda said, adding that Nehru had written a letter to Subhas Chandra Bose on October 20 of the same year stating that the background of Anandamath, associated with Vande Mataram, could provoke Muslims.
