Police affidavit states that the accused planned a 'regime change operation' under the guise of peaceful protest

- SUCHITRA KALYAN MOHANTY ON Pell

THE accused persons involved in the 2020 Delhi riots, Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid and others, were allegedly involved in 'a deliberate attempt to destabilise the state' and therefore warranted jail and not bail', said the Delhi Police on Thursday in its affidavit before the Supreme Court. It further added that the accused persons allegedly conspired to strike at the 'sovereignty and integrity' of the country by a 'regime change operation' executed under the guise of 'peaceful protest'.

"The ocular and irrefutable documentary and technical evidence against the petitioners shows their involvement in engineering a nationwide riot on communal lines. The conspiracy hatched, nurtured and executed by the petitioner was to strike at the very heart of the sovereignty and integrity of the country by destroying communal harmony and instigating the crowd to an extent of armed rebellion," said the affidavit.
