THE Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai on Monday recommended his successor — the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court — Justice Surya Kant as the next CJI.

CJI Gavai recommends Justice Kant as his successor, to take over on Nov 24

The CJI’s recommendation came after a letter from the law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who asked him to nominate his successor Justice Surya Kant as the 58rd CJI on November 24, 2025. It is the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and convention that the sitting CJI recommend the senior most Judge (after himself) as the next CJI.
