Nations with nuclear weapons hold rest of the world to ransom

The Mercury

June 25, 2025

THE letter by Farouk Araie (The Mercury, June 19) should be essential reading in every household. Many people have no idea how destructive the nuclear weapons of today can be.

This could be because the atom bombs on Japan didn't affect everyone across the globe that much. But that was 80 years ago, and the technology has been evolving.

Intentional or not, it reminds one of what has become known as "The Samson Option".

There is actually a book available on Amazon, by Seymour M Hersh, published in 1991 by Random House. On 23 November 1991, a review by Dan Charles appeared in the "New Scientist", while a simple Google search reveals more information on the topic.
