THE ANC Veterans League is proposing new strategies to elect the party’s leadership in an effort to ensure that suitable leaders are chosen.

- THAMI MAGUBANE

However, members are sceptical of proposals being mooted to have the party’s rank and file elect the senior leadership rather than party delegates. One member said such a proposal has not been discussed in his branch, and another said the move would not be a panacea for the party's leadership squabbles.

ANC leaders are calling for radical changes in the organisation to improve ethical leadership, governance, and accountability. Among the changes being proposed is modernising how the party leaders are elected. This change could mean that instead of party delegates voting for a leader, all general members would get to vote.

ANC leaders in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) said this would not be a simple matter, adding that it has its positives and negatives.
