Globally, it remains one of the most pressing health challenges, especially in low and middle-income countries where access to preventive measures and treatment is limited.

During a networking session held prior to the 2025 G20 Summit in Johannesburg, the urgent need to eliminate cervical cancer was the focus of a panel discussion, highlighting this silent epidemic.

In an interview with G20 panellist Zweli Bashman, the managing director of MSD, the discussion centred on the urgent need for Africa to innovate in cervical cancer prevention, balancing progress made and obstacles ahead, while underscoring collective responsibility.

Cervical cancer is not only preventable but also treatable if detected early. The World Health Organization (WHO) has set ambitious targets, commonly known as the 90-90-90 strategy, to eliminate the disease globally. These goals aim for:

· 90% HPV vaccination coverage for eligible populations.

. 70% screening of women by the age of 35 and again by 45.

90% access to treatment for women diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Despite these targets, Africa lags behind, with nearly 40% of countries yet to introduce HPV vaccines into their national immunisation programs. However, successful interventions in other regions can serve as inspiration.

For instance, Rwanda has achieved over 90% vaccination coverage by leveraging school-based programs and community outreach.
