It's always heartening, given shortened attention spans, to find that the long essay still exists in book form. And hats off to Notting Hill Editions which still commissions contemporary authors to write them.
Julian Barnes's Changing My Mind is a pleasing example of the genre, an extended version of Just a Minute, in which, given an open-ended topic, he opines in 57 pages on politics, literature, death and memory.
Changing My Mind is an opportunity to re-examine those opinions he once held and consider whether he still holds them. It turns out that on politics and religion (liberal on one and irritatingly godless on the other) he is, gratifyingly, still right and always has been, whereas on literature he is up for fresh views.
