Worry over rising special needs costs

A leading councillor in Northumberland has said changes in special educational needs (SEND) policy must come from the Government if local authorities are to cope with huge increases in demand.

The number of children with additional needs in the county has soared in recent years, mirroring the situation across the country.
Between 2017 and 2024, the number of children with an education and healthcare plan (EHCP) in Northumberland rose by 104% and a further 22% in 2024/25, putting pressure on the council's finances.
