Pub wins permission for late World Cup openings

A NEWCASTLE city centre pub has won the right to open late into the night to screen England matches during this summer’s World Cup.

City bosses have agreed to grant approval for the Old George to extend its trading hours on two dates when the Three Lions could be playing during the tournament in North America.

Northumbria Police had opposed the pub’s bid to open later on the nights of July 2 and 6, when Thomas Tuchel’s men could be playing in knockout matches, claiming that a refusal to make the events ticketed made them “likely to lead to incidents of crime and disorder”.
