Owners of bakery to retire after acquisition

A LONG-ESTABLISHED family bakery in Gateshead has been sold to another North East firm.
Barry's Home Bakery is a wholesale and retail bakery business which has three shops in Gateshead.
It was set up in 1957 by pastry chef Harry Nickerson and his wife June after a trip home to Tyneside showed him the opportunity to open his own bakery
The family-run business was put on the market due to retirement and attracted interest from a wide range of potential buyers.
It has been acquired by Northumberland-based Penny Petroleum, which started as a single petrol forecourt in Powburn and has grown to encompass 90 sites and more than 1,100 workers around the UK.
