NORTH East businesses have more than half a million unpaid bills on their books after a surge in the number of overdue invoices, new figures suggest.

- GRAEME WHITFIELD

Restructuring trade body R3 has released the figure using analysis of data provided by Creditsafe to show that there were 523,065 overdue invoices on the books of North East businesses in the second quarter of 2025. That was a rise of 16.5% compared to the same period of 2024, one of the biggest increases in the country.

The total number of North East companies with overdue invoices on their books rose by 8.7%, increasing from 37,324 this time last year to 40,587. Across the UK, every region saw a rise in the number of companies with overdue invoices on their books in Q2.
