DEFENDER Chris Mepham relayed a message of defiance in the wake of Sunderland's defeat to Oxford United, making a plea for unity across the fanbase.

The Black Cats played out their final away game of the regular season at the Kassam Stadium losing 2-0 to the U’s - having scored just one goal in their last five matches.

The defender spoke about the success of the season so far and the opportunities that lie ahead with a play-off campaign on the horizon.

“We're extremely disappointed as you can imagine,” said Mepham.

“The standards we've set ourselves are really high and the standards against Oxford were really disappointing.
