Expansion of pedestrian zones starts this month

NEW measures to enhance pedestrian safety and alleviate congestion in Durham City will be implemented from this month (September.)
The no-vehicle pedestrian zones will be expanded and vehicles will be prohibited from crowded areas, as part of new initiatives by Durham County Council.
From September 15, the charge to drive in the Durham Market Place/ Silver Street/Elvet Bridge pedestrian zone will be increased to £5.
‘the existing pedestrian zone in the city centre will be modified to restrict vehicles accessing Durham Market Place from 10am to 4pm and 10pm to 4am; Silver Street from 10am to 4pm and 10pm to 4am; and Elvet Bridge from 10am to 2am.
Police, parish councillors, and city visitors have voiced concerns about the high volume of vehicles using the Market Place and Saddler Street once the restrictions lift at 2am.
