Appeal day set for solar farm battle
The Journal
|March 18, 2026
A DATE has been set for a planning inquiry into the refusal of a solar panel farm in the Northumberland countryside.
Plans to place more than 90,000 solar panels near Whittonstall were blocked by councillors last August.
The 110-hectare development - known as the Highfield Energy Park - had been earmarked for approval by Northumberland County Council planning officers, despite more than 140 public objections.
But councillors refused permission amid concerns over the visual impact the scheme would have on the picturesque part of the county.
Exagen, submitted an appeal in December, arguing there is an “urgent need” for renewable energy generation because of climate change and the cost of living crisis.
A hearing has been announced for Tuesday, May 12 at 10am at Dene Park House in Hexham.
