Phones found in prison cell where ex-ministers are kept

A special raid carried out on Saturday (26) in the 'K' Ward of the Welikada Prison, where several high-profile inmates, including convicted former ministers, led to the recovery of six mobile phones and several other electronic accessories, according to prison authorities.
The operation was conducted by the Emergency Response Tactical Unit of the Department of Prisons, acting on intelligence received. A senior prison official told The Island that none of the mobile phones, taken into custody, contained SIM cards.
The 'K' Ward currently holds more than 100 inmates, including former ministers Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Nalin Fernando, and S. M. Ranjith, all of whom have been convicted and sentenced.
