Perfectly imperfect, and relaxing
The Island
|July 31, 2025
In a world obsessed with flawless finishes and photo-ready plating, there is something curiously comforting about a chipped teacup or a slightly misshapen bowl.
-
These humble, imperfect vessels seem to tell stories—of hands that made them, of meals shared, of drops and cracks and laughter echoing through kitchens. And perhaps, more importantly, they help strip the performance out of eating and return meals to what they were always meant to be: relaxed, real, and shared.
At first glance, flawed tableware might seem ill-suited to grace a meal. The logic is understandable. Most of us, at some point, have hidden our blemished crockery when guests arrive, opting instead for the pristine white china stacked at the back of the cupboard. But, in doing so, we miss an opportunity to foster a different kind of dining experience—one that embraces warmth over perfection, comfort over style.
