Workers expose grim reality of life inside NHS buildings

A new survey of nearly 9,000 staff reports vermin, sewage leaks, faulty lighting, broken toilets and decaying ceilings

NHS hospitals and buildings across the UK are plagued by rats, cockroaches, silverfish and other pests, according to a new survey of nearly 9,000 health workers.
The findings released by the Unison union raise serious questions about the overall state of NHS buildings and the potential impact on hygiene and safety. One in six respondents reported sightings of vermin, including rats, within their workplace in the last year.
A similar proportion (16 per cent) noted infestations of insects such as cockroaches, silverfish, and ants. The union suggests that damp conditions and persistent disrepair may be contributing to the problem.
Beyond pest infestations, the survey highlighted a range of other maintenance issues. Staff reported encountering sewage leaks, faulty lighting, broken toilets and decaying ceilings.
Silverfish are metallic, silvery bugs that thrive in damp conditions while cockroaches can carry diseases and illnesses such as gastroenteritis, diarrhoea, typhoid and salmonella. Rats carry several diseases such as leptospirosis (Weil’s disease), which is spread in their urine.
