EARL Shilton and Barwell Boxing Club and the Heart of England Boxing Club delieved a knockout weekend of boxing at the weekend with twho shows held on Friday and Saturday at Hinckley Boxing Club.
reports on the success of their boxers...
On Friday, first up was a female schools contest over three one and a half minute rounds. Home boxer Georgia Sutton faced off against Mali Rees of South Wye.
The first round was a close affair with Sutton on the front foot looking to work her opponent's body. The action was brisk and entertaining for the crowd. Pressed towards the end of the round and judges could have scored it either way. Sutton started the second quickly. Rees was put onto the back foot. Sutton scored well landing so good straight shots to the head. Sutton continued to press and work the body well. Rees spent most of the round on the backfoot and as the bell rang Sutton had won the round. The final round saw Rees trying to rally and press.
Both girls stood and traded and Sutton impressed with her head movement, avoiding shots and showing good defensive work. There were a series of exciting exchanges shots and the when the bell rang Sutton had edged the final round. Once the judges' cards had been tallied Sutton was announced the winner by unanimous decision.
Home boxer Finn Wheeler was next up competing against One Nation's Morgan Strange. This was another schools contest over three one and a half minute rounds.
Boxing of the southpaw stance Wheeler looked to use his better footwork and faster hands to control the bout. While the opener was close Wheeler's cleaner shots would give him the round. The second was Wheeler's best round landing some solid backhands and the odd hook. Strange was making a fight of it but was a bit rougher around the edges technique wise and this meant a lot of his efforts were not scoring. Wheeler again edged the third with his sharper shots. As he looks to develop he will need to put combinations together. A good energetic bout ended with Wheeler running out a unanimous points winner.
