One afternoon ritual making a comeback

The Herald

November 24, 2025

LAST Saturday afternoon the husband and I took afternoon tea. Real tea in a charming tea shop in Chagford accompanied by one of the best scones I've ever tasted.

And we weren't alone. Nevertheless, I was surprised to learn recently that the average Briton drinks 62,046 cups of tea in their lifetime!!!

Well, I’m average then because in the last few years I've become a bit of a ‘chaiophile’. That's just a grand way of saying tea lover. I’m not a tea afficionado or connoisseur. I just like tea!

For years a black coffee was my morning drink of choice. And not the real stuff... the jar. It was probably because I was always on a diet and all sorts of rubbish was written about black coffee burning the fat off! I know it left a foul taste in my mouth. Besides, tea was what ‘old people’ drank!

I know this because as a youngster there were a couple of ‘elderly’ people I spent quite a bit of time with. I say ‘elderly’... they were probably younger than I am now but to me, at age eight or nine, they were ancient.

PLYMOUTH Parkway return to Bolitho Park tonight knowing this Southern League Premier Division meeting with Wimborne Town carries a little extra weight. With a long stretch of away fixtures looming, it feels like the last chance, at least for a while, to turn recent resilience into the kind of home points that shape a season.
