Council cancels booking by mayoral campaign

CAMPAIGNERS for the Mayor for Plymouth have complained they were given "less than 24 hours notice" that a council venue they had booked could not go ahead.

Posting on their Facebook page the 'A Mayor For Plymouth' initially announced the "vital Community Conversation about Plymouth's future" would be held at Harewood House on Thursday from 6pm-8pm, where there would be opportunity to voice opinions and ask questions as to the need for an elected mayor to run the city.

The post claimed: "We'll explore why our city deserves a Democratically Elected Mayor and how strong, accountable leadership can unlock Plymouth's true potential."

However, in a statement released by the council on its website, it explained that this council-owned venue could not be used due to legal obligations which "strictly limit the role of the council in the period leading up to a referendum particularly in relation to the use of council resources".
