Cleverley not afraid to change Argyle tactics
The Herald
|September 06, 2025
TOM Cleverley has declared he is not stubborn about playing systems but sees the direction for his Plymouth Argyle side to continue lining up with a back four.
It has been a very disappointing start to the League One campaign for the Pilgrims, who have lost five of their opening six games and were heavily beaten 4-0 away to table-topping Cardiff City last Saturday.
With players such as Ayman Benarous, Joe Edwards, Bali Mumba and Matty Sorinola in Argyle’s squad there is plenty of scope for Cleverley to send out his team with two wing-backs and three central defenders.
While Cleverley currently favours the Pilgrims playing with a back four, he insisted he would not shy away from changing approach if it was needed.
He said: “I would say that I’m an adaptor. To be able to change is one of my strengths. I played a back three at my previous club (Watford). I know all the details that comes with that, so it’s something I have coached before.
