Charges for DIY waste to resume at Chelson Meadow

November 22, 2022

PLYMOUTH residents will have to pay to dump some non-household items at Chelson Meadow Household Waste Recycling Centre when charges resume from Monday, December 5.

Charges for DIY waste to resume at Chelson Meadow

The policy, which was previously the case between January and June 2021, will mean that residents who take soil, rubble, plasterboard and asbestos to the recycling centre will need to pay.

The charges were scrapped when the Conservative administration came to power last summer, but with the city council facing a £37.6m shortfall in its budget for local services next year, the free service has been axed.

It is estimated the move could save £177,000 per year.

The charges will be at the same level as they previously were. Soil and rubble will be £2.40 per bag or item, plasterboard £6 per bag or sheet and bonded asbestos £11 per bag / sheet. Residents bringing any of the charged materials to Chelson will be directed to a dedicated area of the site. Payment will be by card only.
