Adaway's statement win takes him closer to British title fight

Connor Adaway twice knocked out Carlos Jackson's gumshield in defeating him at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City

Adaway unleashed a barrage of punches in the seventh round of his headline contest against Atlanta-based Jackson at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Saturday, forcing referee Shada Murdaugh to wave off the fight.

Beating Jackson, who has 20 wins from his 24-fight record, is among the biggest victories of Adaway's career so far - and also means he will move up in the British rankings.

Adaway told The Herald: "Although he [Jackson] is a bit older and he's got a couple of losses on his record, he's fought at a really high level and has beaten a former world champion in Jonathan Guzman, so he was a good fighter

"So getting a win against him was a massive statement for me - especially stopping him."

Jackson had his gumshield knocked loose twice during the fight, which Adaway judged to be gamesmanship by his 36-year-old opponent, in order to regroup under the Plymouth man's onslaught.
