Third day of protests in Iran as US builds up forces
The Guardian
|February 24, 2026
Students at universities in Iran held a third consecutive day of protests yesterday just over a month after the violent suppression of mass street demonstrations left thousands dead.
The protests came amid tensions between Iran and the US, which has built up military forces and pressure in the Middle East as it negotiates with Tehran. The next round of nuclear talks is due in Geneva on Thursday. The US president, Donald Trump, has warned “really bad things will happen” if there is no deal.
Iran vowed yesterday to retaliate “ferociously” against any attack, in comments delivered at a briefing by the foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.
The demonstrations yesterday spread to the all-women al-Zahra University in Tehran, where anti-government slogans were chanted and an Iranian flag was burned. Protests were reported on further campuses, but they did not move to the streets.
