New datacentres 'risk doubling national peak power demands'

The amount of electricity being sought for new datacentre schemes could exceed Great Britain’s current peak consumption, according to the energy regulator.
Ofgem said about 140 proposed sites - driven by artificial intelligence use - could require 50 gigawatts of electricity, which was 5GW more than current average peak demand for Great Britain. The figure emerged in the regulator’s consultation on demand for connections to the grid.
It pointed to a “surge in demand” for applications between November 2024 and last June, with a significant number coming from datacentres.
The number has exceeded even the most ambitious forecasts.
