Malawi Loss of Washington funding halts vital supply of medicines

The freezing of funds from USAID, the world's biggest development agency, has shocked the southern African country of Malawi, one of the world's most aid-dependent states.
Elon Musk, the billionaire adviser to Donald Trump last week said he was working to shut down USAID, which disbursed $43.8bn (£35.2bn) globally in 2023. Chaos is reigning in the development sector, with supplies of medication and children's food in many countries having screeched to a halt.
The US was giving more than $350m (£282m) to Malawi annually, according to the US Department of State, equivalent to more than 13% of the country's 2024-25 budget.
