Britain's fraught role in the long fight for self-rule
No European state has played a longer or more controversial role in handling the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination than the UK. These are some of the key moments for Britain’s involvement.
1914 The world at war
When the first world war began and the Ottoman empire threw in its lot with the central powers, Britain declared Egypt a British protectorate. The following April France, Russia and Great Britain started to make secret plans for the Middle East on the assumption the Ottoman empire would collapse.
The Sykes-Picot deal set out French and British priority interests across the Middle East, including a broad plan for international administration in Palestine.
1917 The Balfour declaration
