Bagpuss returns after more than 50 years with film adaptation
The Guardian
|September 09, 2025
More than half a century has passed since the BBC first aired the 13 episodes of the story of a somnolent pink-and-white striped cat that cemented Bagpuss's place in the annals of TV history.
Now, "the most beautiful, the most magical saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world" has been dusted off to star in a film.
The original show was primarily stop-motion with some paper cutout and conventional animation work. The big-screen reboot will combine live action and animation and has a projected release date of 2027.
Voted the all-time favourite children's programme in 1999, the show was made by Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate, the creators of The Clangers, and filmed in Firmin's barn in Blean, Kent.

Woman in Cabin 10 A fearless Keira Knightley on a yacht? No, being a hack isn't really like that
In The Woman in Cabin 10, Netflix's new potboiler, Keira Knightley plays a fearless justice warrior, a lone voice of dogged truth in a maelstrom of corruption, and this is not her first foray into such terrain: six years ago she played the whistleblower Katharine Gun in Official Secrets, the 2019 film about some pretty dicey US and UK behaviour before the Iraq war.
