OWNER SAYS AREA IS IN 'DESPERATE NEED' OF RESTORATION

- By STUART ARNOLD Local democracy reporter stuart.arnold@reachplc.com @TeessideLive

A FORMER hospital site which now has planning permission for 34 new homes is being placed up for sale.

The plans for Guisborough General Hospital were submitted earlier this year and approved last month by Redcar and Cleveland Council.

Guisborough-based businessman David Walton, of Walton Commercial Services, confirmed he had taken ownership of the site on Northgate, which is being marketed with property firm Savills, the planning permission having been secured.

Mr Walton did not rule out developing the site himself, but conceded a sale was more likely, depending on the level of interest.

He told The Gazette he had been involved from day one with the project and was “Guisborough born and bred”.

The site was originally a workhouse and during the Second World War housed injured servicemen and women before being designated as a hospital after the advent of the NHS in 1948.

The use of the buildings as a hospital ended in 2019, with a new £5.3m primary care hospital operated by the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust eventually being opened to the immediate east three years later.
