MCCOIST BACKS EX-GERS BOSS

- By CRAIG JOHNS craig.johns@reachplc.com @craig_johns

ALLY McCoist believes Steven Gerrard joining Middlesbrough could be the perfect fit for both parties.

Boro are beginning their search for a new head coach after Rob Edwards left to take over at Wolves after just four months in post.

Edwards leaves Boro sitting second in the Championship and with a real opportunity to achieve promotion to the top flight this season.

As Boro draw up an unexpected managerial shortlist, Gerrard is one of the names that features prominently in the bookies' lists.

Having been quickly ruled out in the summer, Gerrard's recent admission that he was close to feeling ready to return to management after his spell in Saudi Arabia makes him a bigger possibility this time around. Having watched Gerrard bring success back to his beloved Rangers, McCoist believes the move would fit both parties.

McCoist told talkSPORT: "I think his next job... and he'll get one, I think it's absolutely vital that it's the right one for him. In answer to your question, I don't know which is the better job between Norwich and Southampton.
