Council's predicted overspend is down

MIDDLESBROUGH Council's overspend is due to be significantly lower than equivalent estimates from three months ago.

Council chiefs now anticipate an overspend of £1.804m, if no further mitigation work is undertaken, down from nearly £4.5m at the end of the last quarter.

The news follows a similar pattern to the 2024/25 financial year, which saw initial predictions estimating an overspend of £3.7m. By the end of November 2024, this figure was down by more than 60%, and figures are down by nearly the same percentage this year. By the end of 2024/25, the final figure was an underspend of more than £2m.

The term “overspend” is being used noticeably less in this latest update from the council.
