DOT sees rise in accredited Airbnbs in Cebu

A growing number of Airbnb operators across Cebu and the Central Visayas region are securing accreditation from the Department of Tourism (DOT), in what officials describe as a proactive measure to professionalize alternative accommodations and safeguard visitor welfare.

DOT Region 7 Director Judy Gabato confirmed the trend, citing increased collaboration between local property managers and the tourism agency.

“We are seeing strong momentum in the accreditation of Airbnb and similar platforms,” Gabato said in an interview.

“This is part of a broader effort to ensure that all accommodations—regardless of size—offer safe, secure, and quality stays,” she said.

The department’s move comes amid a broader national directive to bring short-term rentals under the fold of formal tourism regulation, driven by growing concerns over consumer protection, fair competition, and tax compliance.

While the pricing of these units remains outside the DOT’s jurisdiction, Gabato emphasized that the focus is on integrating Airbnb operators into the official tourism ecosystem.
