Members of the media, including The FREEMAN, captured the tense moments on camera as they hid under tables for cover. Others, including candidates still in their runway looks, rushed to evacuate the hotel venue.

In a statement released hours after the quake, Miss Asia Pacific International assured that all candidates and the organization’s staff were “safe and well,” commending the staff of Radisson Blu Cebu for their “swift and professional response in implementing safety measures during the tremor.”

“We extend our solidarity to the people of Cebu and to all of those affected by this incident, and we offer our prayers for their safety and resilience,” said the organization, which is headed by Cebuana beauty queen-lawyer Eva Patalinjug as president.

In a followup statement, Miss Asia Pacific International announced plans to “realign” the candidates’ activities “in a spirit of compassion and solidarity,” effective immediately. These repurposed activities include relief and fundraising initiatives, as well as awareness and solidarity events.

“Pageantry is not only about celebrating grace, talent, and advocacy — it is also about embodying the true essence of service,” the organization added.

The day after the quake, veteran singer-actress Zsa Zsa Padilla was spotted at the Capitol grounds, donating monetary aid and ready-to-eat packs. The Facebook page of Cebu Province wrote, “The actress’s donations show solidarity with the Cebuano people during difficult times and hardships.”
