Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival pushes for the development of Lusaran's surface water and the construction of gabion dams as critical interventions to secure Cebu City's long-term water supply and resilience against flooding.
Archival raised the issue as he joined fellow officials of the Regional Development Council (RDC)-7 in a consultation and technical budget review with members of the House of Representatives in Quezon City earlier this week. The meeting was designed to align regional priorities with the proposed national budget for 2027.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has lined up an irrigation project in Lusaran, originally intended to support upland farming communities.
Archival, however, stressed that Cebu City's priority is potable water.
"Our point is not only irrigation. Irrigation is important, but Cebu City needs a sustainable supply of water. That's why we are asking DPWH to expand the scope of their study to include water supply for the city," he said in his latest press conference at City Hall.
