The Free Press Journal
|September 10, 2024
Exactly a month after the rape and murder of a postgraduate intern doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Supreme Court on Monday, while hearing a suo motu case related to the incident, asked some serious questions from the West Bengal government, including how the autopsy was conducted without a formal request.
The Bench, comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, also urged the protesting doctors to return to work and assured them that no disciplinary action would be taken if they did so by 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
It also cautioned them that if their protest continued, then disciplinary action may follow.
The court also directed that all photographs of the victim should be immediately removed from all social media platforms to protect her dignity and privacy. "All photographs of the body are to be removed," it said. A similar appeal was earlier also made by the victim's parents.
During the hearing, the Bench went through the status report filed by the CBI and asked for the challan of the body.
