Manjummel Boys hero in fray for Eloor local poll

A dramatic twist has emerged in the forthcoming local body elections in Ernakulam district, where the campaign of Subhash Chandran, survivor of a high-profile cave accident, has entered the political arena.

Chandran, who in 2006 fell into a deep crevice at the Guna Caves near Kodaikanal and was rescued in a daring operation, has filed his nomination as the candidate of the Indian National Congress from Ward 27 of the Eloor Municipality. His entry shifts attention to his personal story, grassroots network and how it might translate into votes.

Chandran’s background presents a narrative that resonates with many voters in his locality. At the age of 19, while on a trip with friends to the cave in Tamil Nadu, he plummeted into a deep shaft and was rescued by his friend Siju David, known as Kuttettan, in an operation which has since inspired the film Manjummel Boys.
