Deposit losses reshape Nanded's local politics

The results of the elections for 12 municipal councils and one nagar panchayat in Nanded district were declared on Dec 21, delivering severe setbacks to several political stalwarts as well as party leaderships.

In all, 83 candidates contested the elections for the post of municipal council president, of whom the deposits of 48 candidates were seized. Similarly, 1,055 candidates contested for the post of corporators, of whom 280 lost their deposits.

With municipal corporation elections scheduled to be held soon, the large-scale seizure of deposits of senior leaders and party-backed candidates is being viewed as a decisive factor that may influence the future course of political strategies in the district. The tenure of 13 local bodies had ended three years ago, after which their administration was managed by appointed administrators. The local body elections were subsequently conducted as per court directives.
