State-Centre standoff stalls police chief appointment

A standoff between the state and federal administrations has brought the selection of a permanent head of the state police force to a standstill, as the government of Tamil Nadu cites interference in its prerogative to appoint the incumbent.

Union Public Service Commission however continues to press ahead with its own list. Law Minister S. Regupathy asserted that the federal government proposed officers for the post of Director General of Police, whom the state government rejected as “unacceptable”, while accusing Edappadi K. Palaniswami, general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazh-agam, of blaming the state government for the vacancy with an eye on the forthcoming Assembly election.
