A sharp political confrontation has taken shape in Tamil Nadu after the ruling DMk-led Secular Progressive Alliance announced a statewide protest on December 24 against the Union government’s proposed Viksit Bharat —- Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Bill, 2025, legislation that seeks to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
The alliance argues that the proposed law would dismantle a longstanding employment safety net for rural households and fundamentally alter the Centre's obligations to provide wage employment.
The protest call, issued on Friday, framed the proposed repeal as an attack on rural livelihoods at a time when wage insecurity and migration pressures remain visible across several districts.
