THE ROLE OF OUTDOOR EXPOSURE IN MYOPIA PREVENTION: WHAT DOES SCIENCE SAY?

|November 19, 2024
The rise in myopia, or nearsightedness, is prompting research into preventive strategies, with outdoor exposure emerging as a key area of focus.
In 2020, the World Health Organisation estimated that approximately 2.6 billion people were nearsighted globally—a figure expected to climb to 3.4 billion by 2030.
Currently, one in three children and adolescents worldwide has myopia, according to a recent study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. In India, rates are projected to reach 48% in urban areas by 2050, with increases also seen in rural regions. This rapid growth highlights the importance of preventive measures.
Let's see how outdoor exposure improves health.
Myopia's impact on health and society
Myopia goes beyond vision issues; it poses significant clinical and socioeconomic challenges.
Uncorrected myopia is a leading cause of visual impairment, often affecting daily activities and job performance. In severe cases, high myopia can lead to complications like retinal detachment, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and even blindness. Conditions like myopic maculopathy and choroidal neovascularisation are particularly associated with vision loss. The burden also extends to personal well-being, as myopia has been linked to lower self-esteem and diminished quality of life, especially in younger individuals.
