The Flag's Makeover: Charkha to Ashoka Chakra, a Unifier Beyond Religion

|August 15, 2025
India's Independence Day is celebrated annually on August 15 to mark the end of British colonial rule in 1947 and the birth of a sovereign nation.
On this historic day, the Indian national flag was hoisted in place of the Union Jack as the clock struck midnight, symbolizing the dawn of freedom. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, addressed the Constituent Assembly in New Delhi with his iconic "Tryst with Destiny" speech, heralding the nation's long-awaited arrival into freedom. The celebrations were joyous yet solemn, taking place in the shadow of the Partition – the subcontinent's division into India and Pakistan – which triggered mass migration and communal violence. An estimated 15 million people were uprooted by Partition and hundreds of thousands lost their lives amid the turmoil. Despite these hardships, August 15, 1947 stands as a moment of triumph when India regained independence after nearly 200 years of British rule.
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru addresses the nation from the ramparts of Delhi's Red Fort on Independence Day in 1947. The Indian tricolor was hoisted for the first time, replacing the British Union Jack, as a free India was born. Despite the joyous occasion, the celebration was tinged with the sorrow of Partition, which had taken place just days earlier. Each year since, Independence Day has been observed as a nationwide holiday across India. The day is marked by patriotic ceremonies, cultural events, and reflections on the nation's achievements. The Prime Minister raises the tricolor flag at the historic Red Fort in Delhi and delivers an address to the nation, highlighting the country's progress over the past year and outlining future goals. Celebratory parades by the armed forces and schoolchildren, the singing of the national anthem "Jana Gana Mana," and festive kite flying all form a part of the vibrant Independence Day traditions. Government buildings are illuminated in the national colors, and Indians everywhere honor the sacrifices of freedom fighters while rejoicing in the sovereignty and unity of their country.
