Sperm counts falling worldwide: Is it for real or exaggerated? Know from the best infertility expert

Over the last few decades, several studies have suggested a global decline in sperm counts, sparking concern that male fertility is under serious threat. But how accurate is this claim, and should men really be worried? Dr. Shobha Gupta, Medical Director and IVF Specialist at Mother's Lap IVF Centre New Delhi and Founder Mumma's Blessing IVF and Birthing Paradise in Vrindavan, offers clarity on the debate.

Dr. Shobha Gupta explains, "These findings cannot be dismissed outright. There is a growing body of evidence pointing towards a real decline, especially in urban populations where lifestyle, diet, and environmental pollution play a significant role."

What Do the Studies Say? A landmark 2017 meta-analysis that evaluated nearly 43,000 men from Western countries reported a dramatic 50% decline in sperm counts over four decades. More recent global studies have echoed similar trends, suggesting that average sperm concentration is dropping by about 1-2% per year.

Why the Debate Exists Despite these alarming numbers, some experts argue that the crisis may be overstated. Critics highlight differences in testing techniques, geographic variability, and the possibility that earlier data may not have been standardized.
