SC reserves judgement on EVM-VVPAT
The Daily Guardian
|April 19, 2024
The Supreme Court has reserved the verdict on a plea for cross-verifying votes between electronic voting machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) systems.

The court in the last two days had heard arguments from various lawyers representing petitioners, from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
On April 16, the SC dismissed petitioners’ request to return to paper ballots, citing impracticality due to India’s size and population. Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Dutta emphasized the need to trust the system, noting differences in population between India and countries like Germany.
The reliability of VVPAT systems has long been questioned due to reported malfunctions and discrepancies. Introduced in India during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, VVPAT allows voters to verify their choices via a paper slip generated alongside EVM voting.
